Jane Helmstadter helps clients advance their business goals by applying practical solutions to a full range of domestic and cross-border purchase and sale, property development, financing, asset management, leasing and joint venture transactions. She has assisted Canada’s most prominent private and institutional real estate developers, investors, owners, landlords and tenants in transactions involving office, retail and industrial property, multi-family residential developments, seniors’ housing and renewable energy projects.

Jane is co-head of the firm's national real estate practice, leader of the Toronto office practice and a past member of the firm’s board of directors. Committed to continuing education and high standards of client service among the real estate bar, she frequently shares her knowledge in forums such as:

  • RealLeasing, a forum on trends and strategies in Canadian real estate leasing
  • International Council of Shopping Centers
  • Law Society of Upper Canada

Passionate about advancing the careers of women in real estate, Jane has been a member of Toronto Commercial Real Estate Women (Toronto CREW) since 1998, serving on the board and as 2009 President. She currently sits on the President’s Advisory Committee and Co-Chairs the Women’s Leadership Committee.

In addition to over 30 years of transactional practice experience, Jane has also developed highly specialized expertise advising clients on their obligations under provincial and municipal land transfer tax regulations.

Trillium Health Partners, together with Partners Community Health, in the acquisition of the Camilla Care Community long-term care facility from Sienna Senior Living in a hybrid transaction where Trillium Health Partners acquired the land and building for future hospital expansion and Partners Community Health acquired the long term care bed licenses and operations of the facility.
Longview Aviation Capital Corp., in its acquisition of the Dash 8 program from Bombardier Inc.
A major Chinese development company in its over-$150-million purchase of a large site near Toronto’s waterfront, for redevelopment purposes.
A private developer in a $116-million refinancing of a mixed use project in Toronto.
Several property owners, in their capacity as landlords, in the insolvency proceedings of Target Canada.
One of Canada’s most prominent real estate investment funds in connection with over $800 million in acquisition, disposition and joint venture transactions in the past five years.
A significant Canadian developer in the negotiation of a number of its strategic joint venture transactions.
Gazit Globe Ltd., in the $221-million sale of its medical office building portfolio to First Capital Realty Inc., pursuant to Gazit’s going-private transaction.
The underwriters in the $184-million bought deal offering of Pure Industrial Real Estate Trust, to fund a $358-million purchase of a portfolio of industrial properties.
Stone Canyon Industries Holdings LLC and Kissner Group Holdings, as Canadian counsel, in their US$3.2-billion agreement to acquire K+S Aktiengesellschaft's North and South American salt business, including Morton Salt and Windsor Salt.
First Mining, in its $28.75-million bought deal offering, issuing 57,500,000 units of the Company.
McEwen Mining Inc., in its US$35-million cash purchase of the Black Fox Mine and other assets from Primero Mining Corp.
Osisko Mining Corporation, in the real estate aspects of its takeover defense against Goldcorp Inc. and subsequent $3.9-billion sale to Yamana Gold Inc. and Agnico Eagle Mines Limited.
Oban Mining Corporation, in the real estate aspects of its acquisition of Eagle Hill Exploration Corporation, Ryan Gold Corp. and Corona Gold Corporation.
First Solar Inc., in the development, permitting, financing and divestiture of an Ontario-based 50MW solar energy facility.
Raleigh Wind Power Partnership, and its sponsor, Invenergy Wind North America LLC with the $179-million project financing of the Raleigh Wind Energy Project.
SunEdison, in construction and term loan project financing for five Ontario-based solar projects.
Glencore International, in the real estate aspects of its $6.1-billion acquisition of Viterra Inc. and concurrent $2.6-billion sale of certain assets to Agrium Inc. and Richardson International.
The developer in the joint venture and title matters related to the Aura condominium project in Toronto, Canada’s tallest condo project.
A private real estate developer in its $105-million sale of a 60-percent interest in an apartment building portfolio, together with settlement of the various joint venture and development management agreements.
