In a recent article in The Globe and Mail, Sophie Virji weighed in on the Canada Revenue Agency’s audit process. She noted that the records requested by the CRA are often quite general, making it difficult to discern the precise focus of the audit.

Despite this ambiguity, Sophie emphasized that under Canada’s self-assessing tax system, taxpayers are obligated to provide the information requested. “While the auditor–taxpayer relationship does have adversarial underpinnings, they want to co-operate with you as much as you need them to co-operate with you,” she explained.

Sophie advised that fostering a spirit of cooperation can lead to more constructive conversations and potentially quicker resolutions.
