Summarize

The definitions of "derivative" and "security" for the purposes of the Securities Act (Alberta) were replaced last Friday (May 27, 2016) pursuant to the Securities Amendment Act, 2016 (Alberta). These amendments are not controversial and are helpful in clarifying the distinction between derivatives and securities as the Province of Alberta proceeds with its G20 commitment to regulate derivatives.

With the first trade reporting of derivatives in Alberta scheduled to occur in two short months (July 29, 2016), this housekeeping item is another indicator that the Alberta Securities Commission intends to proceed as planned.

If you have any questions about your trade reporting obligations, please contact our Trading & Derivatives team.
