The B.C. government announced in its 2024 budget a plan to introduce a tax (the Flipping Tax) on income earned from the sale of a property within 730 days of acquisition. The Flipping Tax, subject to legislative approval, will be imposed under the Residential Property (Short-Term Holding) Profit Tax Act scheduled to take effect January 1, 2025. The B.C. government estimates that the Flipping Tax will generate $43M of tax revenue in its first year.

The Alternative Minimum Tax Goes Mainstream

The 2023 Budget proposes material changes to the alternative minimum tax (AMT) regime which, as discussed below, could result in significant increases to taxes on capital gains (i.e.,5-6 percentage points). Although practitioners have been half-expecting a capital gains inclusion rate increase since 2016 (which has not come to be), this is the practical effect of the AMT amendments for larger capital gains.

Recent amendments to Alberta&rsquo;s Securities Act strengthen the Alberta Securities Commission&rsquo;s ability to address financial misinformation and protect investors. Enacted through the Financial Statutes Amendment Act, 2025 (No. 2), the changes expand the definition of forward-looking information and grant the ASC new authority to temporarily halt trading where misleading or inaccurate information is being disseminated.
