Bennett Jones congratulates its client Kanata Clean Power & Climate Technologies Corp. as it partners with Frog Lake First Nation, to form Frog Lake-Kanata LP, to develop innovative Indigenous-led net-zero infrastructure in Canada.

The partnership will include development of the first net-zero natural gas-powered electricity plant in Canada using NET Power, LLC’s patented technology. Frog Lake First Nation, a Cree-speaking Treaty 6 Nation in Northeastern Alberta, will be the lead investor and 51% majority owner of the facility.

Bennett Jones is Kanata's outside counsel and is advising on all aspects of the partnership with Frog Lake First Nation. Frog Lake-Kanata LP shows tremendous leadership and vision in bringing together Indigenous infrastructure development and solutions to addressing climate change through cutting-edge technology.

NET Power, LLC’s technology uses natural gas and pure oxygen to generate electricity with zero CO2 emissions. Power plants using this technology are already under development in the United States and United Kingdom. The Frog Lake-Kanata LP power plant is expected to generate 300MW of clean electricity 24/7 and produce water for 15,000 households.

Initial project development is underway, engineering will start in September 2021, with construction expected to commence in 2023, to provide power in 2025.

Kanata's news release on the partnership is available here.

In a short video, Chief Greg Desjarlais of Frog Lake First Nation and Chief Joe Dion, Kanata Chairman and Co-Founder, discuss the benefits of the project and the leadership it shows in the global clean energy transition.
