Doug Fenton

Doug's practice broadly includes corporate and commercial disputes, securities litigation and regulation, shareholder activism, bankruptcy and insolvency matters, fraud, defamation and class actions. Within those areas, Doug has acted for clients across a wide range of industries including mining and energy, real estate, fintech and cryptocurrency, automobiles, financial services, lending and the investment industry.

Doug has extensive experience before all levels of court in Ontario, including the Commercial List and the Court of Appeal for Ontario. He has also acted as counsel in matters before the courts across Canada, including British Columbia, Alberta, Saskatchewan, Yukon, the Federal Court of Canada and the Federal Court of Appeal, as well as before various regulatory bodies.

Doug regularly handles complex cross-border disputes, coordinating closely with counsel and service providers in jurisdictions such as the United States, Mexico, Dubai, the Caribbean and Europe. He works collaboratively with colleagues at other law firms, insolvency trustees, accounting firms and external investigators to manage complex litigation mandates for his clients.

Doug’s practice also includes a substantial focus on appellate matters, where he has handled a wide range of appeals on corporate and commercial law, constitutional law and bankruptcy and insolvency issues. He leverages deep legal knowledge to develop winning appellate arguments.

A fierce advocate, Doug is also adept at providing measured advice to mitigate or avoid litigation. He advises Boards of Directors and Special Committees on corporate governance and risk management and has considerable experience conducting internal investigations and managing responses to agency inquiries.

Doug previously clerked at the Court of Appeal for Ontario, where he worked for Associate Chief Justice Hoy, Justice Nordheimer and Justice Harvison Young.
