For all student recruiting, we adhere to the guidelines set forth by the Vancouver Bar Association.

All in-firm interviews will be conducted in person, however, we are happy to accommodate a virtual interview if preferred by the candidate.

Our students have prepared the My Future in Law: Student Recruitment Guide, a guide to the application and interview process. We invite you to review the guide as it may answer many of your questions.

Work Assignment/Rotation System

Our Vancouver office does not have formal rotations for our summer or articling programs. For our summer program, we believe that the summer is a time for students to explore and to experience as much or as little of a practice area as desired. Summer Law Students are free to work with our lawyers in their chosen interest areas or may wish to explore a broader range of work. Summer and articling students can expect to work on matters from various practice areas such as corporate, capital markets, mergers and acquisitions, private equity, commercial litigation, class actions, arbitration, commercial real estate, infrastructure, tax litigation, and more.

We recently updated our approach to articling rotations and no longer have formal rotations in place. Instead, our articling students are provided with a detailed and comprehensive articling checklist to ensure that they gain meaningful exposure to a variety of tasks and experiences while meeting their Law Society requirements. Articling and summer students also complete a physical office rotation during their time with us, providing them with exposure to different practice groups. We have received positive feedback from our students on this updated approach and have found that it helps them identify their desired practice area earlier on in their articles, while building meaningful connections in that group. Our Professional Development Team also works closely with articling students throughout the year to ensure that they are getting exposure to their practice area(s) of interest.

Mentoring System

Each summer student is assigned a principal (a partner or senior associate) and a mentor (an associate). The role of the mentor is to help introduce you to the firm and to answer questions about legal practice, your workflow, and work assignments. The principal serves as a senior mentor, providing additional guidance and support throughout your summer experience.

Each articling student is assigned a principal (a partner) and a mentor (an associate) whose roles are to help you integrate into the firm and provide guidance on your workflow, assignments and practice management. Our Professional Development Team also works closely with you to ensure that you receive individualized attention, support, and career planning guidance throughout your time with us.

Professional Development

Through our own Bennett Jones Academy, we offer a series of in-house seminars and programs to supplement the summer and articling program and ongoing professional development. This begins with an in-depth orientation and continues with regular programs designed to build your practice management skills and provide you with introductions to specific practice areas. We also encourage our students to attend Bennett Jones Academy sessions designed for associates.

Feedback

We recognize that feedback is essential to your professional development. Our students receive regular informal feedback from assigning lawyers, principals, and mentors, as well as formal written reviews during the summer and articling terms. We also welcome feedback from our students about their experience at the firm and work closely with each student class to continually enhance our programs and the overall student experience.

Social Events

Our students are encouraged to take part in social events at the firm. Many of our social events focus on our commitment to the community and building and maintaining lasting relationships amongst the students. Past events have included lawyer happy hours (which are hosted by the students), pirate ship sunset cruises, puppy yoga, karaoke, candle making, kayaking in Deep Cove, snowshoeing expeditions, team cooking competitions, office holiday and summer parties, and a firm golf day.

Salary & Benefits

All articling and summer law students receive a competitive salary, including vacation pay. For articling students, the firm covers all Law Society enrolment fees and PREP tuition fees, including your full-time salary while attending PREP.

During articles, we offer a comprehensive benefits package including extended health care, vision, dental, employee assistance plan, short and long-term disability and a fitness subsidy.

All articling students receive a third-year tuition bonus.
