Ethan Schiff has a general litigation practice with significant experience in multi-jurisdictional class actions alleging product liability and competition offences. Ethan has worked on cases alleging defects and/or conspiracies with respect to motor vehicles and their components, medical devices, pharmaceuticals, airfare, household appliances and consumer products. Among other experience, Ethan acted at the Ontario Court of Appeal in successfully upholding the dismissal of a $1.85-billion proposed class action alleging negligent inspection of a building at the certification stage. Ethan is a Member-At-Large of the Ontario Bar Association's class actions law section.

Ethan's practice engages a full range of commercial disputes and claims in product liability, breach of privacy and fraud. Ethan also assists clients with freedom of information requests and judicial review of administrative decisions. Ethan has acted before all levels of court in Ontario, and is counsel in matters before courts in British Columbia, Alberta, Saskatchewan and Nova Scotia.

Ethan brings diverse experience to his practice. While articling, he was seconded to the Bank of Montreal’s Wealth Management team and he previously worked as a provincial prosecutor and legal researcher for the City of Toronto. Ethan devotes significant time to providing pro bono services, including through Pro Bono Ontario.

Ethan is a member of the Advocates’ Society, the Toronto Lawyers’ Association and is a licensed notary public. In law school at University of Toronto, Ethan was heavily involved in the mooting program, including winning first place in the Gale Cup and the Commonwealth Moot in Glasgow, Scotland.

Bridgestone, in the defense of class actions related to anti-vibration rubber parts.
A. O. Smith Corporation and its affiliates, as Canadian national product liability counsel with respect to household and commercial products.
Bureau Veritas SA, in its successful defence of a $1.85-billion proposed class action Das v George Weston Ltd, 2018 ONCA 1053, aff’g 2017 ONSC 4129, leave to appeal to the Supreme Court of Canada refused, 2019 CanLII 73201.
C.R. Bard Inc. and its affiliates, in defence of a class action relating to medical devices which prevent blood clots from causing pulmonary embolism.
Hyundai and Kia, in defence of a class action relating to allegations of air bag defects.
General Motors, in defence of a class action arising out of alleged emissions misrepresentations (2022 ONSC 2180).
American Airlines, in defense of class actions related to airfares.
Successful intervention in a judicial review of the Alcohol and Gaming Commission's decision to disqualify certain applicants: Reynolds v Registrar (Alcohol and Gaming Commission), 2019 ONSC 5571.
