Ethan has a general litigation practice, including experience in class actions, judicial reviews, products liability, fraud, competition, privacy and securities matters. Ethan attends before Ontario courts in motions, trials and appeals. He recently acted at the Ontario Court of Appeal for Bureau Veritas SA, a publicly traded international certification and testing agency, in successfully upholding the dismissal of a $1.85 billion proposed class action at the certification stage.

Ethan brings diverse experience to his practice. While articling, he was seconded to the Bank of Montreal’s Wealth Management team and he previously worked as a provincial prosecutor and legal researcher for the City of Toronto. Ethan devotes significant time to providing pro bono services, including appealing criminal summary convictions and volunteering as duty counsel with Pro Bono Ontario.

Ethan is a member of the Advocates’ Society, the Toronto Lawyers’ Association and the Ontario Bar Association and is a licensed notary public. In law school at University of Toronto, Ethan was heavily involved in the mooting program, including winning first place in the Gale Cup and the Commonwealth Moot in Glasgow, Scotland.

Recent Experience

Successful intervention in a judicial review of the Alcohol and Gaming Commission's decision to disqualify certain applicants: Reynolds v Registrar (Alcohol and Gaming Commission), 2019 ONSC 5571.
Bureau Veritas SA, a publicly traded international certification and testing agency, in its successful defence of a $1.85-billion proposed class action commenced against it and Loblaws Companies Limited alleging they neglected to warn workers of structural deficiencies in the Rana Plaza building in Bangladesh: Das v George Weston Ltd, 2018 ONCA 1053, aff’g 2017 ONSC 4129.
C.R. Bard Inc. and its affiliates, in defence of multiple proposed product liability class actions in multiple provinces relating to medical devices which prevent blood clots from reaching the lungs in patients at risk of pulmonary embolism.
A. O. Smith Corporation and its affiliates, in defence of products liability claims arising out of alleged defects in household and office appliances.
