Artem Barsukov is a Swedish- and Russian-speaking lawyer who carries on a global arbitration practice out of Edmonton, leveraging a near-decade of experience in international dispute resolution.

Artem carries on a globally focused construction practice, uniquely serving his clients' needs as both a solicitor and a litigator. He is recognized by clients and colleagues alike for his unparalleled work ethic, commitment to his clients, and an ability to distill even the most technical cases into persuasive submissions to foster positive outcomes.

Artem's professional experience reflects these innate talents. Over the years, Artem has successfully represented clients all over the world in complex international and domestic arbitrations collectively worth over two billion dollars. He has acted as arbitration counsel under world's leading international arbitration systems, including ICC, LCIA, and UNCITRAL, and appeared before multinational Arbitral Tribunals in Doha, Qatar, London, England, and Mexico City, Mexico, as well as virtually during the COVID-19 pandemic. Artem has a particular expertise in construction disputes, having acted for owners, contractors, and subcontractors in a wide variety of disputes arising from large-scale international construction projects.

In his corporate practice, Artem has represented clients in complex public-private partnership (P3) transactions involving a wide variety of infrastructure projects worth billions of dollars, including airports, power transmission lines, and power generation facilities. In doing so, Artem has been able to leverage his rich dispute resolution experience to continue advising his clients after transaction closing, assisting with the prosecution and defence of various claims both during and after construction.

A somewhat of an evangelist for all things Swedish, Artem has been an active member of the Swedish-Canadian Chamber of Commerce since 2014 and has served as a Board Member since 2019. Artem is presently engaged in an initiative to bring Swedish know-how in CleanTech into Canada to support Federal, Provincial, and Municipal efforts to address climate change. His passion for Sweden comes from having previously lived in Uppsala, Sweden as an international exchange student, where he developed a deep appreciation of the Swedish culture and learned to speak Swedish at a proficient level. Born and raised in equally cold West Siberia, Artem is also fluent in Russian and is a dual citizen of Canada and the Russian Federation.

Having previously spent four years at the firm's office in Toronto, Artem now carries on his global practice out of his hometown of Edmonton, Alberta. Artem is a member of the following associations dedicated to the advancement of arbitration in Canada and around the world:

  • Chartered Institute of Arbitrators
  • Rising Arbitrators Initiative
  • ICC Canada Arbitration Committee
  • ADR Institute of Canada
  • ADR Institute of Alberta
  • The Advocates' Society
  • Swedish Arbitration Association
  • International Association of Young Lawyers (AIJA)
  • Young Arbitrators Sweden
  • Young Canadian Arbitration Practitioners

Artem also regularly appears as a guest lecturer at the University of Alberta School of Business in courses focused on international law and international business transactions.

Prior to joining Bennett Jones, Artem was a Law Clerk with the Court of Queen's Bench of Alberta and a member of the Editorial Board of the Alberta Law Review journal.
