A Changing World: New Risks, New Opportunities
The global economy proved resilient in 2025 despite disruptive US trade policy and elevated uncertainty. Against the backdrop of a "rupture" in the world order as described by Prime Minister Carney in his Davos speech, developments in 2026, including the war in the Middle East, are again testing the capacity of the global economy to adapt to shocks and structural change.
The forces of change give rise to a range of possible scenarios for growth, inflation and interest rates for the rest of the year and beyond. More importantly, they are driving a transformation of the economy, with both risks and opportunities for Canada over the medium term. In a more dangerous and fractured world, Canada must grow and mobilize its assets for economic and national security. A surge of private investment is a critical condition of success.
The Bennett Jones 2026 Mid-Year Economic Outlook will:
- take stock of the evolving global context for policy and business planning, from geopolitics to AI;
- review economic prospects for the U.S. and Canada over the next 18 months; and
- discuss how governments and businesses can work together to manage risks and seize opportunity.
Join us for our webinar presentation on May 27 to hear insights from:
- Paul Beaudry, Senior Economic Advisor, former deputy Governor of the Bank of Canada, and Professor at UBC.
- Serge Dupont, Head of the Public Policy Group, former Deputy Minister in the Government of Canada and former member of the Executive Board of the International Monetary Fund.
We are delighted to welcome special guest Carolyn Wilkins, former Senior Deputy Governor of the Bank of Canada, who helped steer Canada's monetary and financial policies through a period of global disruption and who can offer a unique perspective on meeting today's challenges.
A brief presentation of the Economic Outlook will be followed by a discussion and by a question-and-answer session moderated by Perry Spitznagel KC.
