The WILL Awards ?are presented annually to female members of the Alberta legal profession. The purpose of the WILL Awards is for the Association of Women Lawyers (AWL) and The Counsel Network (TCN) to recognize the contributions of women lawyers in seven separate categories. The nominees in each category are evaluated on criteria including vision and leadership, impact on other lawyers, mentoring other women lawyers, dedication, initiative, career accomplishments, and results achieved.
The awards will be presented at the sixth annual WILL Awards Dinner on November 17, 2016 at the Fairmont Hotel Macdonald in Edmonton.
Rose M. Carter, Q.C.
The Leadership in the Profession (Private Practice) Award recognizes and applauds a lawyer in private practice who has shown extraordinary leadership in one or more of several areas including: legal skills and capabilities, contribution to legal education and/or scholarship, mentoring of law students and junior lawyers, demonstrated leadership in law and diversity initiatives, and a commitment to being a positive role model for other lawyers.Rose represents medical practitioners and individuals, practicing general litigation, administrative law representing professionals before their regulatory bodies and corporate/commercial litigation. She also participates in public inquiries and medical malpractice actions.
To complement her practice, Rose is an Adjunct Professor of the Faculty of Medicine and Dentistry at the University of Alberta. She frequently lectures at local, domestic and international seminars and meetings for physicians and medical students regarding medical negligence and bioethics issues.
Rose is a recipient of a certificate for meritorious service by the College of Physicians and Surgeons of Alberta. She is also a former Bencher of the Law Society of Alberta.
The Honourable A. Anne McLellan, P.C., O.C., A.O.E.
The Lifetime Achievement Award recognizes and celebrates the significant accomplishments over the course of the recipient’s career.Anne joined Bennett Jones after a distinguished career in federal politics, where she served four terms as the Liberal Member of Parliament for Edmonton Centre from 1993-2006. She provides national and international strategic planning assistance to the firm's clients.
During her political career, Anne was Deputy Prime Minister of Canada, Minister of Public Safety and Emergency Preparedness, Minister of Health, Minister of Justice and Attorney General of Canada and Minister of Natural Resources and Federal Interlocutor for Metis and Non-Status Indians.
Prior to entering politics, she was a professor of law at the University of Alberta, where she served at various times as Associate Dean and Acting Dean. She retired from the University of Alberta in June 2013. In May 2015 Anne became Dalhousie University's seventh chancellor.
In July 2009, Anne was appointed an Officer of the Order of Canada, recognized "for her leadership and dedication as a politician and law professor, and for her contributions as a community volunteer." In October 2013 she was awarded the Alberta Order of Excellence, the province's highest honour.
Anne serves on the Board of Directors of Agrium and Cameco. She served on the Boards of Nexen from 2006 to 2013 and the Edmonton Regional Airport Authority from 2007 to 2015. She is Vice-Chair of the Board of the Institute for Research on Public Policy and serves on the Boards of the Edmonton Community Foundation and the Canadian Stem Cell Foundation. She also served as a member of the Premier’s Council for Economic Strategy from 2009-2011.
