Bennett Jones LLP Partners with Kinetica Ventures

January 28, 2015

Bennett Jones LLP, Canada's premier energy law firm is very pleased to be partnering with Innovate Calgary as a founding associate member of Kinetica Ventures (see also "Alberta supports energy innovation through Kinetica Ventures" on the Alberta Government website).

Bennett Jones has a long history of innovation in the energy sector beginning with the Leduc oil strike in 1947 which transformed the province's economy. Innovators like Maclean (Mac) Everett Jones, a namesake of our firm, drafted the first contracts for Imperial Oil, charting new ground for the legal profession, and in some ways “inventing” the legal basis for an entire industry. Today, Bennett Jones is recognized as a top tier energy law firm in Canada by Chambers Global, an internationally respected legal directory, and is recognized globally.

Bennett Jones remains committed to serve innovative Canadian and international businesses involved in the energy sector in Canada and around the world. For over 90 years, Bennett Jones has played an integral role in the development and growth of the Canadian energy industry, and we have grown internationally with our clients. Often considered the leader in Canadian energy law, we are proud to have been active participants in our clients' success stories – including many Canadian firsts and leading and supporting many internationally acclaimed deals. We have also assisted a number of leading international energy companies with their successful entry into the Canadian energy market.

"We are delighted to support Kinetica as an associate member", says Bennett Jones partner Michael Whitt, co-head of Bennett Jones' information technology practice. "Kinetica's commitment to commercialization of innovation in the energy sector and to attract energy technology top researchers and SMEs from around the world is fully aligned with the efforts of Bennett Jones to provide groundbreaking legal solutions to clients in the energy sector within Alberta and Canada and international clients who have developed an Albertan and Canadian presence."

Bennett Jones lawyers and intellectual property professionals have supported the technology and innovation sector through our long history. Some of our largest clients began with us as small, local enterprises with great ideas, energies and technologies. We are proud to have been a part of their success. Bennett Jones continues to both be an innovator, and to support innovation, in all of our offices and activities, and with all of our clients.

Established in the early 1920s in Calgary, Bennett Jones grew with the Western economy, expanding to Edmonton (1982) and then eastward to Toronto (1989) and Ottawa (2009). The firm's first expansion outside of Canada began in 2010 with a representative office in Beijing and a law office in the UAE. The firm's expansion in the Gulf region continued in 2012 with the opening of an office in Doha, Qatar. In 2013, the firm opened its first office in the US in Washington, DC, and in 2014, the firm opened offices in Vancouver and Bermuda. Bennett Jones is also proud to have been recognized for 13 consecutive years as one of Canada's 50 Best Employers.
