Randy Hughes is co-head of the firm's competition and antitrust practice. He has successfully handled the competition law and Investment Canada aspects of numerous domestic and international mergers and acquisitions and represented clients before the courts in criminal proceedings under the Competition Act and before the Competition Tribunal in reviewable matters.

Randy represents clients in domestic and international conspiracy investigations and prosecutions involving the Competition Bureau in Canada and other competition authorities around the world. He also represents clients in substantial civil actions, including leading class actions, by those claiming damages as a result of anticompetitive conduct. Randy has acted as counsel for the Commissioner of Competition and for private sector clients in leading merger and abuse of dominance cases before the Competition Tribunal.

Randy has served as Canadian non-governmental advisor (NGA) at the International Competition Network (ICN) of enforcement agencies Cartel Workshops and Annual Conferences, on the faculty of the ABA/IBA International Cartel Workshops and as a member of the ABA Antitrust Section International Cartel Task Force. He was formerly Vice Chair of the Section's Cartel and Criminal Practice Committee and is currently an Officer of the IBA Antitrust Committee.

TRW Automotive Holdings Corp., in the acquisition of TRW by ZF Friedrichshafen AG for US$ 13.5 billion.
Parkland Fuel Corporation, in its approximately $378-million acquisition of the assets of Pioneer Energy, and the Commissioner of Competition's application to the Competition Tribunal challenging the acquisition of Pioneer's retail gasoline assets in certain local communities.
Osisko Mining Corporation, in its response to Goldcorp Inc's unsolicited offer and subsequent agreement with Yamana Gold Inc. and Agnico Eagle Mines Limited to jointly acquire 100% of Osisko's issued and outstanding common shares for total consideration of $3.9 billion.
Energizer Holdings Inc., in its US$185-million acquisition of the Stayfree pad, Carefree liner, and o.b. tampon feminine hygiene brands from Johnson & Johnson, Inc.

Canadian counsel to TMX Group Limited, in the $931-million acquisition of London-based Trayport Holdings Limited, and its US-based affiliate, Trayport Inc., and its sale of Natural Gas Exchange Inc. and Shorcan Energy Brokers Inc.
Gibson Energy Inc., in the $412-million sale of Canwest Petroleum’s retail propane business to Superior Plus.
Holtzbrinck/Macmillan Publishers, in litigation arising from a challenge to the Consent Agreements reached with the Competition Bureau and registered with the Competition Tribunal related to E-books and in class actions that were initiated against Apple, Macmillan and other publishers.
Brewer's Retail, Inc., in the successful defence of a $1.4-billion competition class action alleging conspiracy in the distribution and sale of beer in Ontario. The claim was dismissed on summary judgment in March 2018 and that decision and the costs award were upheld on appeal in April 2019.
Apple Inc., in the Commissioner of Competition's inquiry into Apple's Canadian iPhone distribution agreements. The Commissioner abandoned his inquiry in January, 2017 without requiring a remedy.
ITWAL Limited, in the successful defence of the prosecution of ITWAL, Nestle, Mars and three individuals in the Ontario Superior Court of Justice for conspiracy to lessen competition in the chocolate products industry under section 45 of the Competition Act. Charges were stayed in September, 2015.
