John Major and Anne McLellan comment in CBC News on the process of appointing a Chief Justice of the Supreme Court of Canada, in light of the upcoming retirement of The Rt. Hon. Beverley McLachlin. John pointed out how the process in Canada is not a political one like it often is in the United States. Anne describes appointing a Chief Justice as "the most important appointment a prime minister makes . . . the Chief Justice, once appointed, will be there, bar unforeseen situations, up until mandatory retirement."
