Don Cranston is a former member of the firm's partnership Board of Directors. His practice focuses on commercial litigation, medical and legal malpractice and disciplinary hearings, public administration law and alternative dispute resolution. Don regularly appears before the courts in Alberta and various administrative tribunals, and has appeared before the Tax Court of Canada, the Federal Courts and the Supreme Court of Canada. He is a graduate of the Harvard intensive mediation course, and often is asked to mediate or arbitrate disputes.
Don has been elected by the Alberta legal profession as a bencher (director) of the Law Society of Alberta. He has been elected by the benchers to be President of the Law Society of Alberta in 2018.
In 2008, Don was inducted as a Fellow of the American College of Trial Lawyers. Membership is limited to no more than one percent of the bar in any U.S. state or Canadian province and is extended to individuals "who have mastered the art of advocacy and whose professional careers have been marked by the highest standards of ethical conduct, professionalism, civility and collegiality." The fellowship is considered one of the greatest honours for a litigation lawyer in North America. He is also recognized by Lexpert as repeatedly recommended in several areas, has been inducted as a fellow of Litigation Counsel of America, and is appointed a roster member of the Supreme Court Advocacy Institute. He has the Lexis/Nexis Martindale-Hubbell pre-eminent peer review rating, AV.
Don has lectured in or chaired seminars and courses on a variety of litigation matters, including legal ethics, corporate and commercial litigation, fiduciary responsibilities, civil litigation strategies, medical malpractice, administrative tribunal practice and decision writing.
Don is an active member of both the legal and business community. He is a member of the board of directors of the Alberta Law Reform Institute, and has been Chair of the Legal Education Society of Alberta board, the Alberta Hospital Edmonton board, the Edmonton Community Legal Centre board, the University Hospital Foundation board, the Child, Adolescent and Family Services board, the Canadian Bar Association National Committee on Judges' Salaries and Pensions, and the University of Alberta Faculty of Law Alumni and Friends Association board. He has also been a member of the Pro Bono Law Alberta board, the Royal Alexandra Hospital Foundation board, the Law Society of Alberta Claims Committee, the Institute of Chartered Accountants Conduct and Disciplinary Panel, the Provincial Court Civil Claims Mediation Advocacy Committee, the Alberta Student Finance board, the CASA Foundation board and the AHE Foundation board.
