The Associate General Counsel ("AGC") will be responsible for supporting other members of the Firm's existing General Counsel Group in all facets of their roles. Responsibilities include, but are not limited to, working with and assisting the existing members of the General Counsel Group in the following areas:

  • Risk Management matters
  • Development of new Firm policies and oversight and updating of various existing Firm policies
  • Management of Litigation affecting the Firm
  • Escrow Agent matters
  • Client Compliance Certificates
  • Client Engagement Agreements (Outside Counsel Guidelines)
  • Human Resources matters
  • Law Society Compliance and Professional Responsibility matters
  • Internal Training and Education
  • Firm Insurance matters
  • Contract review
  • Lobbyist Registration
  • General Advisory role

More specifically, the AGC will (with support from other members of the General Counsel Group) have primary responsibility for:

  • the review, negotiation and finalization of Outside Counsel Agreements proffered by clients and prospective clients; and
  • the Firm's response to Client Compliance Certificates and related documents (working with members of the Firm's IT group)

Qualifications:

To be considered, a candidate for the AGC position should have at least five years of experience working with a major Canadian law firm; privacy, cyber security, and intellectual property experience is viewed as very beneficial, as well as the following qualifications:

  • A member in good standing of the Law Society of Alberta or Law Society of Ontario
  • Superior legal drafting skills and the ability to provide high quality and timely support to meet the Firm's corporate, strategic and operational needs
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills with excellent organizational skills
  • Demonstrates sound judgement with the ability to critically analyze situations and a sound understanding of business sensitivities and confidentiality
  • Exhibits a business-minded approach to law
  • Ability to develop strong relationships with the leadership team and Partners throughout the Firm
