Jessica Boily (formerly Jessica Mathewson) has a general commercial litigation practice, with expertise in environmental law and litigation. She has experience acting on behalf of clients in various corporate-commercial disputes, including breach of contract, fraud, class actions and competition matters. She advocates for her clients before all levels of courts in Ontario on varied matters including motions, applications, trials, appeals and judicial reviews.
In the regulatory sphere, Jessica regularly advises clients with regulatory compliance and crisis management concerns, including in the areas of occupational health and safety, environmental law, pest control products, transportation of dangerous goods and Aboriginal law. She is well-versed in navigating complex disputes, including representing clients in appeals of environmental orders, handling contaminated site litigation and defending clients charged with environmental, occupational health and safety and regulatory offences. She routinely appears before the Environmental Review Tribunal and the Ontario Court of Justice. Jessica also has a unique depth of experience in assisting clients with pest control products registration, compliance and data compensation arbitration.
Jessica acts as duty counsel to self-represented parties appearing in the Ontario Superior Court of Justice, providing summary advice and other assistance as part of the Pro Bono Ontario Duty Counsel Project. She also represents litigants at the Small Claims Court on a pro bono basis.
Prior to summering and articling at Bennett Jones, Jessica worked for the Crown Attorney's office. She also spent a semester working with the Department of Justice in Yellowknife, Northwest Territories, as part of Osgoode Hall Law School's Intensive Program in Aboriginal Lands, Resources & Governments.
Jessica is a member of the Advocates' Society and the Canadian Bar Association. She is an active member of the environmental litigation bar and is a member of the Ontario Bar Association's Environmental Law Section Executive. She is also a notary public.
