Keely Cameron and Alicia Yowart write in The Lawyer's Daily on how Canadian courts are seeing a growing trend of parallel class actions being filed in different jurisdictions.

They say, "These parallel actions can erode the efficiency that class actions are intended to promote while risking duplicative proceedings and conflicting decisions."

In response to the challenges, "courts in recent years are encouraging national co-ordination and communication between themselves and class counsel. Courts have also embraced granting pre-certification stays of overlapping or duplicative proceedings to manage the strained judicial resources, among other aims."
