Former competition commissioner Melanie Aitken and Randal Hughes continue to chair the antitrust group at Bennett Jones from Washington, DC, and Toronto. They steer a team that includes six additional partners and eight associates. Pascale Dionne-Bourassa joined the partnership in August 2022 from her own firm, D3B Avocats, while former partner Beth Riley left the group a month later for McMillan.

The firm acted for Quebecor and its wholly-owned subsidiary Videotron as the divestiture buyers of Freedom Mobile from Shaw Communications as part of the latter’s now completed merger with Rogers Communications. Bennett Jones also acted for US investment firm Alleghany in its €11 billion acquisition by Berkshire Hathaway, which the bureau unconditionally cleared in Phase I. Conduct work includes defending Pharmascience, Aurobindo Pharma, Auro Pharma and Dr. Reddys in a proposed price-fixing class action seeking roughly €3.5 billion in damages. The group is also defending JP Morgan in the gold and silver price-fixing class actions filed in Ontario and Quebec. The firm defeated the claimants’ motion to add the company as a defendant in April 2022, but that decision is now on appeal.
