Ranjeev Dhillon comments in the Globe and Mail’s feature on “Private equity's $1-trillion question.” The story looks at the enormous amount of Canadian capital that’s lying in wait and where it may be deployed, including the cannabis industry.
Ranjeev says, “I kind of see it as the day after Prohibition. It's the legalization of alcohol all over again, only on a bigger scale. There's a general view that Canada has a market-leading edge and first-mover advantage, and because of that people are looking to Canada as a place to park money.
As more money comes in you see more people who are coming in from outside the industry—people with backgrounds in agriculture, or pharma or retail, people with capital-markets experience. That professionalization has quelled investor concerns including in the private-equity space.”
