Bennett Jones assisted ATCO Electric Ltd. in environmental matters in relation to the Jasper Interconnection Project. This involved an application before the Alberta Utilities Commission and a Detailed Impact Assessment with Parks Canada for the construction of an approximately 44.7 km electrical transmission line from the Jasper National Park boundary through the Park to the Town of Jasper. The purpose of the Project is to interconnect the Town of Jasper to the Alberta Interconnected Electric System, as the Town is currently powered by isolated generation. The Project is not considered a “designated project” under the Canadian Environmental Assessment Act, 2012; however, Parks Canada is the responsible authority for assessing the Project in accordance with Section 67 of the Canadian Environmental Assessment Act, 2012. Pursuant to the Parks Canada Directive on Impact Assessment, 2015, the potential environmental and sociological impacts of the Project are to be assessed by Parks Canada by way of the Detailed Impact Assessment. We were counsel to ATCO Electric Ltd. in relation to all aspects of this Project including the preparation and review of the Detailed Impact Assessment and its review and consideration before both the AUC and Parks Canada.
