Ranjan Agarwal Interviewed on Controversially Titled Bill in Law Times
December 01, 2014
In Yamri Taddese's Law Times article, "Lawyers Alarmed at Barbaric Cultural Practices Act," Ranjan Agarwal is interviewed about new legislation on "zero tolerance for barbaric cultural practices". Ranjan discusses how, while the act contains "reasonable elements" the name of the bill "puts some communities at unease that this act is really being aimed at or geared towards some very traditional practices. When you're calling them barbaric cultural practices and you're talking about forced marriages and polygamy, most Canadians' go to Muslim, South Asian, African or Middle Eastern communities. I think optically, it puts those communities on the defence."
