Co-Head of the firm's Employment Services Practice Group, John Gilmore focuses on management-side employment and labour, wrongful dismissal, human rights, constitutional and privacy law. John advises and represents clients regarding employment contract and collective agreement drafting and interpretation, as well as in commercial transactions involving employee restructuring and down-sizing.

John appears regularly before federal and provincial labour relations boards, and labour arbitration boards. John also has extensive experience before federal and provincial courts and human rights tribunals. John has particular expertise representing federally regulated employers before federally appointed arbitration boards, the CIRB, the Federal Court and the Federal Court of Appeal. At the provincial level, John often appears before the Alberta Court of Appeal and the Alberta Court of Queen's Bench on a wide array of employment and labour matters. John represents clients in litigation proceedings on issues such as wrongful dismissal, disability plans, employment contracts, compensation/share arrangements, breach of fiduciary duties and employee confidentiality.

John also advises clients on executive employment compensation, incentive plans and severance entitlement and assists with the combination and reorganization of employees in corporate mergers and acquisitions.

John is the author of the recently published Annotated Alberta Employment Standards Code. John is also the author of Human Resources Guide to Health Issues in the Workplace and a co-editor and contributor to Illness and Disability in the Workplace.

DenCorp Online Services Inc., in its sale to RecallMax Acquisition Ltd., an affiliate of TriWest Capital Partners V (2015) Inc.
Canadian Utilities Limited, an ATCO company, in the sale of its entire Canadian fossil fuel-based electricity generation portfolio for approximately $835 million, which was completed in three stages, through the sale of its interest in the Cory project in Saskatchewan to SaskPower International Inc., a sale of its interest in the Brighton Beach project in Ontario to Ontario Power Generation Inc., and a sale of the balance of the applicable generation assets through a sale of its equity interest in ATCO Power Canada Ltd. to Heartland Generation Ltd., an affiliate of Energy Capital Partners.
Cenovus Energy Inc., in its $17.7-billion acquisition of ConocoPhillips’ Deep Basin conventional assets in Alberta and British Columbia and 50% interest in the FCCL Partnership.
Repsol S.A., in the proposed $15.1-billion acquisition of Talisman Energy Inc.
CST Canada Coal Limited, in its acquisition of coal assets of Grande Cache Coal LP and Grande Cache Coal Corporation for aggregate consideration of approximately US$433.9 million.
Canadian counsel to TMX Group Limited, in its acquisition of London-based Trayport Holdings Limited, and its US-based affiliate, Trayport Inc.
Cenovus Energy, in acquiring 50% Stake in FCCL Partnership.

Edge Natural Resources LLC, in the acquisition of Canamax Energy Ltd. by Edge and senior management and certain other shareholders of Canamax in a transaction valued at approximately $82 million.
NES Global Talent, a UK-based technical and engineering recruitment and staffing services provider, in its acquisition of Alberta-based Sure Flow Consulting Services Ltd. and Sure Flow Oilfield Services Ltd.
Benevity, Inc., a supplier of workplace giving and volunteer management software solutions, in a CDN $38 million Series A financing by JMI Equity, a growth equity firm focused on investing in leading software and services companies.
EOG Resources, Inc., one of the largest independent North American oil and natural gas exploration and production companies, in a divestment of all of its assets in Manitoba and certain assets in Alberta through two separate transactions for approximately US $410 million.
TriWest Capital Partners, one of Canada's leading private equity firms, in its acquisition of Triple M Housing Ltd, a leading manufacturer of factory built housing.
Guide Exploration Ltd., in its acquisition by WestFire Energy Ltd. for approximately $200 million.
Compass Petroleum Ltd., in the $97.8-million acquisition of all of the issued and outstanding shares of Compass Petroleum Ltd. by Whitecap Resources Inc.
Balboa Investment Inc., in its acquisition of Tonko Realty Advisors Ltd. from Pyxis Real Estate Equities Inc.
North West Upgrading, in the sale of a 50% interest in NWU's Redwater upgrader/refining project to an affiliate of CNRL, and the related formation of the North West Redwater Partnership between NWU and that CNRL affiliate. 
RTL-Westcan Limited Partnership, in a Canada-led offering of CDN$130 million of senior secured second lien guaranteed notes and concurrent acquisition of substantially all of the assets of ECL Transportation Ltd.
Upper Lake Oil and Gas Ltd. and Monterey Exploration Ltd., in their Arrangement Agreement that will provide for a business combination between the companies.  The transaction is to be undertaken pursuant to a plan of arrangement.
