Rick advises on all aspects of planning, land use and property development. He assists clients navigate the panoply of planning processes and regulation, including the Municipal Government Act, land use bylaws, statutory plans, and other applicable policies and regulations. Rick completed his LLB and LLM law degrees in the Netherlands, however he is not a practicing lawyer in Alberta. He is working on completing the qualifications to practice law in Alberta. Within Bennett Jones’ Commercial Real Estate department, as an Advisor he provides the firm’s clients assistance and guidance regarding municipal planning and development.
Rick served as Chairman of the Calgary Subdivision and Development Appeal Board for 15 years, providing leadership to a quasi-judicial tribunal of 25 members. He has presided over thousands of appeal hearings and authored the resulting tribunal decisions. He has the distinction of never having a SDAB decision overturned by the Alberta Court of Appeal.
Rick is familiar with all aspects of development permit and subdivision applications, land use re-designations and development and subdivision decisions. He has extensive knowledge and experience regarding development and subdivision appeals. He is known for his diplomatic and objective approach to resolving planning issues within a sensitive political environment. He is a proactive leader with a demonstrated success record in developing sound and professional relationships with all levels of government and stakeholders.
