Manager, Human Resources
The Manager, Human Resources plays a very important role in the delivery of best in class HR services and support in the Toronto office. Responsible for providing HR support to specific business units and practice groups, this role will ensure the Toronto office continues to be an employer of choice, committed to attracting, developing, rewarding and retaining the best talent available in the market.
Essential Functions:
Working under the direction of the Director, Human Resources and in collaboration with the broader National HR team, this role will be responsible for the delivery of HR services and support to specific business units and practice groups in the Toronto office, this role will:
- Lead the recruitment services for legal assistants, law clerks and administrative positions, including pre-screening and interviewing applicants, conducting reference checks, making final selections and preparing offer letters
- Provide advice and coaching to staff and managers with respect to the annual performance management process and performance related issues as required, including progressive discipline and performance improvement plans
- Provide advice and recommendations to internal clients on the effective structure and utilization of administrative support staff
- Pro-actively monitor and manage staffing requirements that align with the broader business needs of the Firm
- Coordinate the deployment and effective utilization of the Firm's resource team and other administrative resources
- Pro-actively manage succession planning and ongoing training and development of staff within the Toronto office
- Ensure the Director, Human Resources is informed of significant issues that may create risk or jeopardize the achievement of Firm goals, and those that are not being addressed adequately at the line management level
- Provide leadership, guidance and support to the HR Coordinator
- As a member of the National HR team, this role is involved in the design and delivery of HR best practices, processes and programs that are aligned with the business objectives and culture of the Firm
- Manage staff communication and feedback through such avenues as staff meetings and one-on-one meetings
- Working closely with the Director, Human Resources and key stakeholders, effectively executes employment terminations
- Coordinate and participate in the onboarding and orientation program for new hires
- Manage and monitor overtime
- Provide necessary education and materials to managers and staff including the organization of workshops and in house training programs
- Participate in HR related projects as required, including health and safety programs, AODA and other legally required programs in the Province of Ontario
- Ensure Exit Interview processes are followed and reporting is provided to key stakeholders, as appropriate
- Contribute to the completion of TLOMA Salary and Benefits surveys
Qualifications:
- Post-secondary education in Human Resources or a related field and a CHRP/CHRL designation
- Minimum of 5-7 years of generalist Human Resources management experience including recruitment, employee relations, performance management and organizational behavior, preferably gained in a law firm or professional services environment
- Thorough understanding of the Employment Standards Act, 2000
- Ability to demonstrate sound judgment in the administration of established policies, programs, benefits and compensation
- Ability to effectively work with and through people across all levels of the organization
- Highly responsive and committed to achieving high quality outcomes that appropriately balance the interests of the Firm and its employees
- Responsible for building and maintaining collaborative and collegial relationships across all levels of the organization
- Demonstrated ability to work in a fast-paced and demanding environment
- Superior interpersonal skills, as well as written and oral communication skills
- Proactive approach to problem solving
- Excellent attention to detail
- High level of maturity and professionalism
- Solid knowledge of Microsoft Outlook, Word and Excel
- Self-motivated with the ability to manage multiple tasks under minimal supervision or guidance
- A positive and enthusiastic work ethic and the ability to work well within a team environment is essential
