Senior Financial Accountant
The Role:
The Senior Financial Accountant will play a key role on the centralized Accounting team in Calgary, supporting financial reporting across the Bennett Jones group. This position offers the opportunity to contribute in a sophisticated, fast-paced environment that includes multicurrency and multi-entity reporting across multiple jurisdictions. Working closely with the Manager, Financial Reporting and Controller, the successful candidate will gain exposure to complex accounting matters, strengthen leadership capabilities, broaden strategic perspective, and build a strong foundation for continued professional growth and advancement over time.
Essential Functions:
Support the Manager, Financial Reporting, in monthly, quarterly, and annual reporting:
- Involvement in monthly partner profit-sharing allocations, with the opportunity to deepen expertise in partnership accounting and take on increasingly complex assignments.
- Play a vital role in month-end and year-end close processes ensuring accurate and timely financial statements and statutory reporting.
- Four sets of Financial Statements reporting on the main trust and partnerships.
- With an additional seven sets of Financial Statements for smaller corporations
- GST reconciliations and CRA filings
- Annual US and Canadian tax returns for partnerships, corporations, and trusts.
- Contribute to the preparation of annual budgets and gain exposure to broader financial planning activities, supporting continued growth into more senior responsibilities
- Perform internal control reviews and recommend enhancements to processes and workpapers that support best practices across the team and create opportunities to influence broader operational improvements.
- Assist the year-end audit process by preparing support requests and working papers, while building strong cross-functional relationships and expanding ownership of critical deliverables.
- Mentor and develop the team where applicable, while further strengthening your own leadership and coaching capabilities.
- Contribute to a range of special projects and initiatives that provide visibility, stretch opportunities, and ongoing professional development across the function.
Qualifications:
This role is ideally suited to a motivated accounting professional seeking to deepen technical expertise and broaden exposure to complex financial reporting. It offers room for growth for an individual who is eager to expand their capabilities, take on increasing ownership, and make a broader impact within the Accounting function.
- Bachelor's degree in accounting or other related field combined with a Chartered Professional Accountant (CPA) designation.
- A minimum of 3 years of broad-based finance and accounting experience, ideally gained within a large accounting firm or other sophisticated professional services environment, with demonstrated readiness to grow into a broader and more senior scope.
- Experience in all functional aspects of finance and accounting, including financial analysis, reporting, accounting, tax, and financial systems.
- Excellent presentation, writing, and verbal communication skills; the ability to interact credibly and diplomatically with all levels in an organization.
- Proven success managing multiple priorities, meeting deadlines, and supporting the development of team members within a collaborative environment, with the potential to take on expanding leadership responsibilities.
- Demonstrated knowledge of Accounting Standards for Private Enterprises (ASPE) and tax regulations.
- A self-starter who is intuitive, and exercises professional judgment, maturity, and integrity.
- A hands-on individual who can juggle multiple and changing priorities without compromising quality or deadlines.
- Ability to see the broader picture while maintaining keen attention to detail.
