John Batzel has a wide-ranging employment and labour law practice acting for corporations, management teams, executives and employees.
John specializes in all aspects of employment law, including managing the employment relationship, employee discipline and termination, wrongful dismissal claims, pay disputes, human rights complaints, disability and insurance issues, employee shareholder disputes, enforcement of non-competition and confidentiality agreements, contract negotiation, benefit and incentive plan management, executive compensation, employee privacy issues, workers compensation claims, occupational health and safety matters and alcohol and drug testing. John also regularly advises purchasers, sellers and other interested parties with respect to corporate mergers, acquisitions, financings and restructurings. He advises management clients on various union matters including certification, de-certification, collective agreement negotiation and grievance arbitrations.
John has appeared before a range of adjudicative bodies in Canada and elsewhere including employment tribunals under the Canada Labour Code, labour and employment arbitrations, the Alberta Court of Queens' Bench, the Alberta Court of Appeal, the Alberta Labour Relations Board, the Alberta Human Rights Commission, the Ontario High Court of Justice, the United Kingdom Employment Tribunal and the Texas District Court.
John makes frequent presentations to clients, lawyers and the public on employment law matters. He also regularly volunteers with Calgary Legal Guidance, a free legal clinic in downtown Calgary.
