Len Sali on Sawmill Win
June 16, 2010 - In the June 16 issue of the Globe and Mail, Len Sali comments on the federal settlement his client, South Yukon Forest Products, won. The decision ruled that Ottawa should award $67 million, plus interest and costs, to owners of the sawmill, which had been in business for only a couple of years when a logging moratorium began in 2000. The settlement will be used to pay back the mill's creditors and shareholders. Of the win, Sali states, "In our review of the jurisprudence…there was no indication of a judgement against any government in Canada in an order of magnitude such as this."
