Oil & Gas
From the oil sands to offshore drilling, support service providers to pipeline companies, domestic production to international operations, Canada's oil and gas industry is booming.
For more than 80 years, Bennett Jones has played an integral role in the development and internationally recognized success of the Canadian oil and gas industry. Our long-standing relationships with our clients are especially important to the firm, as we have grown with them over the years to advise on some of Canada’s largest oil and gas development projects, mergers and acquisitions in Canadian history, including the CDN$27 billion merger of Alberta Energy and Pan Canadian to form EnCana. We have acted for clients on the Hibernia Project, the Maritimes & Northeast Pipeline, the Mackenzie Valley Pipeline, the Canaport LNG terminal and the Athabasca Oil Sands Project.
Today, our team acts as key strategic counsel to industry conglomerates as well as emerging independent producers, operators, governments, investor groups and service companies. We have extensive knowledge of the regulatory framework in which the industry operates and represent both private and public sector clients involved in the acquisition, disposition, exploration, production, marketing and transportation of crude oil, natural gas, natural gas liquids, sulphur and coal. We are experienced in heavy oil development, oil sands extraction and coal bed methane projects, having acted for many industry-leading participants. We also assist in connection with offshore exploration and production, project financings, title reviews, and income trust conversions of oil and gas businesses.
Our work also includes a broad range of commercial matters, acting as competition counsel in mergers and acquisitions and providing strategic advice on export and commodity tax compliance matters. We also have extensive experience negotiating joint ventures and resource development agreements for native reserve and treaty lands, counselling governments and proponents on engineering, procurement and construction contracts, and representing industry participants on surface rights acquisition matters for wells, facilities and pipelines.
